Can
We Fix it?
Recently we have been presented with an interesting challenge.
| One of our customers has bought a 1983 UR quattro which has not run since 1991 due to a garage dispute about rough running after the clutch was replaced. | ![]() |

The car has been sitting in storage for 10 years with the injection system, the ignition system and the cooling system all disassembled and various body & engine parts in the cabin & the boot. |
| The task we have been given is to put the car back together, get it running & drivable and to get the car an MOT. | ![]() |

We'll let you know how we get on... |

Can
We Fix it?
Well it took us a while but we managed it.
| Having re-assembled the injection system with a new fuel meter and re-assembled the cooling system with a new auxilary radiatior we drained the fuel tank, put some new fuel in and turned the ignition key. | ![]() |
After about 5 seconds cranking the car started for the first time in 10 years. This we feel confirms what all quattro owners know about the quality of their cars.
The next stage was to refit all the various body parts that came with the car.

We then decided that we needed to replace the following:- clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, front brake discs, pads, callipers, flexible hoses, rear brake discs, pads, callipers, flexible hoses a set of new wiper blades, a replacement hazard lights switch and a new battery and it was ready for a road test. |
On the road test the car drove superbly with no engine or transmission noise, all the bushes and suspension components were tight just as a car with 72000 miles should be, but the car filled the road with smoke.
|
We began to advise our customer that the car might need a new turbo. But before we jumped in at the deep end we changed the valve stem seals by pressurising the cylinder bores so we did not have to remove the cylinder head. And the smoke stopped. |

We then set about replacing the following:- o/s engine mount, 2x outer CV gaitors, 10 valve seals, 10 shims, oil & filters, the rear washer bottle, o/s door catch and a gearbox exhaust mounting.

The car then went for an MOT which it got and a full valet half a tank of fuel and its ready to be returned to it's owner. |
